The FB Leopold Co Inc. was founded in the USA in 1924 and is a worldwide leader in engineering and manufacturing systems for large scale potable water treatment plants. FB Leopold throughout its long history has substantially developed and modernized the two principal systems of water treatment i.e. sedimentation and sand filtration offering innovative technologies for both.
For sedimentation, FB Leopold since the 1980s has been supplying and continuously developing the unique mechanically driven automatic sludge suction collectors for rectangular sedimentation tanks. With these systems the efficiency of the sedimentation tanks is increased to the benefit of the whole treatment process and the plant operation staff no more needs to shut down tanks to enter and manually remove the accumulated sludges at regular intervals.
For sand filtration, FB Leopold since its foundation specializes in the fabrication of special filter bed underdrain systems. Since 1977 FB Leopold has succeeded in replacing the ever problematic cast-in nozzles with modern technology plastic channel floors. These are laid onto the whole floor area of the beds and ensure stability and reliability of the system for many years as well as the most uniform and balanced flow of water and backwash air over the whole surface of the bed. Since 1990 FB Leopold has added a special replaceable porous cover (IMS cap) over the underdrain channels which replaces the gravel layer between the underdrain floor and the sand layer thus reducing the overall media depth.
FB Leopold undertakes not only the complete design of new sand filter beds but also the refurbishment of old filters with the replacement of the traditional nozzle floors with special plastic modular underdrain channels. Till now FB Leopold has installed more that 6.500 sand filters worldwide.
In Greece, FB Leopold with the marketing and technical support of New Engineering Trading SA carried out in 2005 the refurbishment of the historic water treatment plant of EYDAP in Galatsi, Athens, replacing the old nozzle floors of all sand filter beds with modern plastic underdrain channels and installing mechanical sludge removal collectors in the sedimentation tanks.
